The New York Times Has Me Pegged
The New York Times website as a fun little quiz that asks a series of questions and comes up with a heat map showing which areas of the United States your dialect most resembles. I took the test and all of the United States was stone cold blue with the notable exception of the Greater New York area. It said that my speech most resembled the speech in Paterson, Newark, New York City and Yonkers. My parents grew up in Paterson, I went to high school in the same county as Newark and lived for many years in New York City. Yonkers is the only town on the list to which I have no connection.
Questions are things like “What do you call a sweetened carbonated beverage?” I remember when my college roommate from California suggest we go get a pop and everyone just stared at her.

Wow, that’s a little freaky. It came up with my exact City!
This did a remarkable job right up until it came time to pinpoint cities. Where I come from (Twin Cities) was deep red, but it chose three other Midwestern cities, from any of which I would readily recognize speakers as not being from Minnesota. What it did manage to do was grab that I spent many years in Louisiana growing up; that, obviously, came from crawfish/crayfish.
Did thus a bit ago and was eerily on the mark. Put me in Buffalo, Grand Rapids MI and Rockford IL. Grew up in Buffalo, parents both from GR and now live in suburban Chicago.
Although I’ve lived elsewhere as an adult, all of my developmental years were spent in the same area, and that’s the same area that, not only my parents, but all four of my grandparents, hail from. I wondered how well it would do for people whose regional backgrounds were less cut and dry. Thanks for taking the time to share that with us.
